The Value of 200 Cell Phones

A recent audit revealed that major health organizations lost nearly $200,000 in thefts. Canadian news agencies are reporting that Sask. Hospitals have been losing a lot of money to thefts. However, it is the Crown Investments Corporation that suffered the most in losses. The company and its subsidiaries lost $184,000. A SaskTel employee managed to steal 22 phones from the inventory of the hospital. It is reported that the same thief managed to fraudulently acquire 200 more cell phones. Apparently, the employee was selling the devices to third parties.

The Real Cost of the Devices

These devices that are being stolen from the medical facilities are supposed to function in health care. But being cell phones they most probably have the same basic functions. So besides their "medical super power", the phones could be used to do every day things like calling, messaging and even real money online gambling.

But it is the medical application that gives the device its value. We are not talking about the monetary value of the cell phone but the social value. These devices are upgraded so that they can aid in health care.

Then the actual value of the cell phones becomes the opportunity cost experienced by the patient who failed to access the equipment. May be for the cell phones the damage might not be that much but for other devices stolen the possible damage is near fatal.

Four telemetry packs were stolen from Saskatchewan Health Organizations. Even though the theft of the portable heart monitoring devices was reported to Regina police, four heart patients were deprived of monitors. But then such devices, unlike cell phones, have one function. They most probably found their way to people who desperately needed them.
